Sunny Salcombe?

Neil O'Connor

We decided to leave Dartmouth and head for the Yealm on Friday. However, it was gray and drizzly with occasional for forecast, so we had Salcombe in mind as an alternative.

The wind was W/SW so we sailed out of Dartmouth just East of South until clear of Start Point. It was distinctly murky at times so we were using the radar. Eventually we tacked West making a course of about 280 degrees clearing Start Point and Bolt Head just West of Salcombe. The weather really closed in at that point. We had a reef in the main and the visibility dropped right down. Also we had a battery alarm so we had to run the engine to keep using the autohelm and radar.

We decided to turn about and head for Salcombe, and felt our way in to the harbour using the chartplotter and the radar. Once in the harbour ir cleared a bit but was still pretty gray.

That evening though the sun came out. Saturday was bright and sunny giving me a chance to clean the decks, which were particularly dirty after the BBQs in Dittisham.
