Passage to Scilly

Neil O'Connor

After a day's rain on a mid-stream pontoon on the Fal we sailed downriver under the genoa to Premier marina in Falmouth for fuel, food and water. We managed to touch the bottom maneuvering for the fuel berth - it really is a tight channel just outside the marina.

The next day we left at 0640 to meet Tigermoon II and to sail together to the Isles of Scilly, planning to go to St Mary's.

Leaving Falmouth for Scilly

The forecast for for a N'ly 2-4 becoming variable 2-4 then NW later. We started out motoring in light winds and sunshine.

Abeam the manacles we managed to sail trying the cruising chute for a while before the wind dropped again: cruising chute down and motor on! As we rounded the Lizard we could see white caps on the waves and before long we were sailing close hauled in a NW F4/5 with a reef in the main and genoa. Two hours later the wind dropped and we shook the reefs out.

We sailed into St Mary's Sound about 1700, and decided to anchor in Porthcressa. It was calm but cloudy, tucked away in a beautiful anchorage.
