Onto the Morbihan

Neil O'Connor

Entering the Morbihan

For years we have walked the shores of the Morbihan, taking in the islands in this inland sea. It long been an ambition to sail here, and finally we have made it. A careful study of the tides and currents led us to leave at midday. Initially we had light winds sailing to the entrance of the Morbihan wing and wing before turning North and sailing in on a gentle broad reach. We carried on sailing in spite of the light winds, sometimes with 6 knot currents under us and little control of the boat.

Sailing in the Morbihan

At five we anchored SE of the Ile d'Arz. We then spent a couple of nights at anchor giving us chance to go ashore and explore the island.

Ile d'Arz Anchorage

The next day we took the dinghy ashore and went for a walk around the island. There are a few restaurants and a little supermarket. We stopped at a creperie for lunch on a sunny terrace before walking around the island.

It being a Sunday there were quite a few visitors on the island. There is an excellent beach on the South of the Island, which was crowded with motor boats and people enjoying the sunshine.
