Nab Tower Race

Moody S31 Galatea in the Nab Tower Race

The Moody Owners Association annual Nab Tower Race was held on Saturday 15th May. We had potential poor weather forecast to arrive giving the organisers a challenge to determine how to proceed. We had 15 boats entered for the race, but with strong Easterly followed by strong Westerly winds forecast a few decided it wasn’t the day to race. The organisers’ decision was to start the race but to call a shortened course in the event that the weather wasn’t good once out to the East of the Isle of Wight.

It was a blustery start on Saturday morning with a good Easterly breeze and the fleet was soon tacking fast upwind to the East. However, off Bembridge the wind died to nothing leaving us all drifting slowly towards Bembridge ledge. We decided to shorten the course yet further due to the lack of wind to go around Solent Racing Mark “M”. The fleet struggled slowly around the mark in close proximity. Thankfully a gentle breeze then filled in from the West allowing us to sail back to the finish … with the wind on the nose yet again. The fleet managed to get home for lunchtime before the forecast strong Westerlies and rain arrived.
