Leaving before the Weather Arrives

Neil O'Connor

The weather forecast for Friday 2nd July promised deteriorating weather for the weekend with SW'ly winds. We decided to head to St Mary's for one night before leaving for Falmouth and shelter.

On the way to St Mary's we anchored in Porth Conger to visit Gugh and St Agnes and to have an excellent meal in the Turk's Head the most South Westerly pub in Britain.

Shadow and Tigermoon II anchored in Port Conger

The forecast for Friday 3rd July was for a SW 4-5. We left at 0615 and had a fast sail to the Lizard then motor sailed as far as the Manacles before sailing into the Fal estuary and berthing up in Port Pendennis Marina at 1815. Tigermoon II berthed outside us.

Enjoyable and beautiful as the Isles of Scilly are, it was good to get into a marina for a couple of nights for a decent shower, electricity and to stock up.

The next night was filthy weather with almost horizontal rain. We were all invited around to Falken for a meal. That's all I can remember of the evening as I had rather too much to drink.

The next day we went up the Fal to moor up on a mid-river pontoon again. We sailed most of the way under genoa only with the wind behind us ... the best sail set up with a hangover. I managed to completely c**k up rafting to Tigermoon II trying to berth with the stream. I blame the hangover.
