Almost Sailing from St Malo to St Cast

Neil O'Connor

On Monday we set sail from St Malo to St Cast. A short ten mile hop, so in spite of the light winds we thought we would sail.

We started sailing down the maim channel from St Malo with light winds behind us, gybing from one side of the channel to the next keeping a wary eye out for any ferries, of which there were none. After about ninety minutes and a three and half mile zig zag course the wind died completely and the engine came on. At least it was sunny for our motor across the bay.

Two miles out from St Cast a light Southerly wind developed so we managed to get a little bit of a sail in. We radioed ahead and were given a berth on nice wide and solid pontoons.

We liked St Cast marina. Nice berths, good facilities and good wifi.

The next day we got the bikes out and cycled into town to do some shopping and have a coffee. Elaine spotted a column above the town so we went to have a look. It commemorates a victory against the English for which, apparently, St Cast is famous.

It was a lovely sunny day so later that day we went for a walk around the headland near the marina.
